Fed: No changes to ASX supervision recommended: Senate report
A senate committee says there should be no major change to Australia's system of securitiesmarket supervision despite potential for conflicts of interest.
The Senate Economic References Committee examined the advantages and disadvantagesof the Australian Stock Exchange's demutualisation and listing.
It also looked at whether there was a need to alter the framework of market supervision.
The committee identified several disadvantages, including conflicts between the ASX'scommercial and supervisory responsibilities, an inherent conflict resulting from self-listing,and a conflict from expanding its commercial activities, which result in it having tosupervise its direct competitors.
It says the exchange itself argues that many of the disadvantages identified are problemsof perception rather than reality.
