QLD: Virgin to start cheap flights to Townsville next month

Discount airline Virgin Blue will take on the major carriers in north Queensland next
month with $99 one-way fares between Townsville and Brisbane.

The airline says it is aiming to break an east-coast stranglehold by Qantas and Ansett,
whose fares are twice as much.

The airline, owned by billionaire British businessman Sir RICHARD BRANSON, was launched
last August and has carried over 200,000 passengers between Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide
and Sydney.
