QLD: Killer dingo stalked boys
Dingoes have stalked two young boys on Queensland's Fraser Island before savaging one to death.
Police say the boys aged nine and seven had been camping on the island off the southern
Queensland coast with their parents.
It's understood the boys had gone for a walk early today from the camp at Waddy Point
when the dingoes followed them.
The boys, believed to be from Brisbane and from separate families, became frightened
and ran home but the older boy had tripped and was fatally mauled.
Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says a risk assessment will be conducted to see whether
all dingoes on the island should be destroyed.
Outside a cabinet meeting on the Gold Coast today, Mr BEATTIE has extended his sympathy
to the families of the two boys involved.
He says some 30 to 40 dingoes have been destroyed on Fraser Island over the last 10 years.
Meanwhile, a Queensland Environment Department spokesman says a dingo management strategy
for Fraser Island is almost complete after two years of consultation.
