Fed: Singapore Airlines slashes jobs and services
MELBOURNE, April 12 AAP - The outbreak of the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS) and the war in Iraq has forced a major international airline to slash jobs andservices.
Singapore Airlines announced today it has cut services to destinations throughout theworld, including Australia by nearly 20 per cent as a result of the "tough times" theairline industry is currently facing.
As a result, there will be three fewer flights to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane from May.
More than 200 trainee cabin crew workers have also been sacked.
Singapore Airlines cabin crew spokesman Sim Kay Wee said the job losses were unfortunate.
"We have looked at alternative means of absorbing these trainees into our workforcebut at the moment this is simply not possible," he said.
"The global travel downturn has impacted on our schedules and our staffing needs and, unfortunately, we have had to act now because it would have been inappropriate to continuethe training.
"These trainees will be given priority when we resume training."
Mr Wee said local offices will be contacting passengers to provide details of flightchanges and to make arrangements for their bookings onto other scheduled services.
"The latest reductions will result in 199 fewer frequencies a week or 19.7 per centof capacity in terms of available seat kilometres," he said.
"All airlines are having to respond by containing costs as best they can. The industryis experiencing very tough times."
