NT: Latham begins whirlwind tour of the NT

DARWIN, Feb 23 AAP - Education in remote Australia, the high cost of fuel in the bush
and defence dominated federal Opposition Leader Mark Latham's first day of his Northern
Territory tour today.

Mr Latham's whirlwind three-day visit to the top end began as he was quizzed by students
of the Alice Springs School of the Air.

About a dozen 11 to 13-year-old students and some parents from as far as 1,200km away
questioned Mr Latham about the high fuel prices in the bush, and the cost to families
of boarding schools and distance education.
